FEMSPEC, an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal dedicated to challenging gender through speculative means in any genre, seeks volunteers to fill the following role:
BOOK REVIEW EDITOR
*Duties Include:
*Soliciting book reviews from contributors to the journal, supervising the book review submission process, screening submitted book reviews for quality and relevance to the scope of the journal, coordinating with the Production Editor to ensure approved book reviews are published in each new issue of the journal.
*Attending collective meetings on a regular basis (now Thursday 12:30 PM EST) - meetings are held every week during production, then move to every other week afterward
*This position will be trained by our current Book Review Editor for a period of time before the applicant fully takes over editorial duties.
Preferred Qualifications:
*Experience in academia or an advanced degree in English, Women's and Gender Studies, or a related field.
*A background in feminist and/or speculative theory/literature.
CREATIVE WRITING EDITOR
Duties Include:
*Coordinating the peer review process for creative writing submissions to the journal. The Creative Writing Editor would liaise with authors who submit to the journal, would pass their submissions on to peer reviewers, and would return reviewers' comments to the authors.
*Attending collective meetings on a regular basis (now Thursday 12:30 PM EST) - meetings are held every week during production, then move to every other week afterward
Preferred Qualifications:
*Published creative writer OR holds an MFA or PhD in Creative Writing
Experience in academia or an advanced degree in English, Women's and Gender Studies, Creative Writing, or a related field.
*A background in feminist and/or speculative theory/literature.
PRODUCTION EDITOR
Duties include:
*Collating and formatting content for each new issue of the journal. Liaising with the journal's editor and other volunteer collective members to make changes to the issue's content and layout until the end of each issue's production period.
*Attending collective meetings on a regular basis (now Thursday 12:30 PM EST) - meetings are held every week during production, then move to every other week afterward
Preferred Qualifications: *Advanced experience formatting documents in both Microsoft Word and PDF form.
*A background in feminist and/or speculative theory/literature.
PROOFREADER
Duties include:
*Proofreading all material to be published in the journal. This includes scholarly articles, book and media reviews, event coverage, and other material. Note that proofreading is restricted to correcting errors of grammar, punctuation, citation, and phrasing - the Proofreader will not be reviewing or altering the content of the submitted material (this is covered in the peer review process).
*Attending collective meetings on a regular basis (now Thursday 12:30 PM EST) - meetings are held every week during production, then move to every other week afterward
Preferred Qualifications: *High grammatical aptitude
*Familiarity with MLA citation protocol
*Experience using Microsoft Word and Google Docs, along with general comfort using computing technology
*Past editorial or proofreading experience is a plus, but not required
WEBSITE EDITOR
Duties include:
*Updating FEMSPEC's website at the collective's request - this could include updating biographies of collective members, altering the website's layout, adding or removing content from various pages in the website, and updating the website with information about the current issue of the journal
*Attending collective meetings on a regular basis (now Thursday 12:30 PM EST) - meetings are held every week during production, then move to every other week afterward
Preferred Qualifications: *Experience working with website editing software and general technological aptitude
