Part 4: "The Power of the Positive Crone" by Carole Spearin McCauley
Announcement: Femenina Sube International Community Arts Collective
We are constructing a mosaic mural on Isla Mujeres, MX. IxChel, the Maya fertility goddess, energizes the island. As an interactive arts activity, we rented a space to construct a mural of fertility goddesses from around the world, involving those who pass by on the streets. We are creating a happening, or a multidisciplinary work of art with the intent of connecting spectators (Mariellen Sandford, Happenings and Other Acts, Routledge, 1995}. Many photograph the mural’s progress to post on Facebook. We then post these photos in online myth, women’s studies and art classes, and talk about revitalizing mythic images by putting the Great Mother up in various forms; thus we do women’s studies in the streets, and create material to write about in articles, conference papers, and online classes.
Some photographs of the work have been accepted in art shows, including at SUNY ESC. The work required previous preparatory research such as visiting ruins in England, a mosaic tarot sculpture garden in Italy, the British Museum, and the Rockefeller Museum in Israel.
The work attracts international women artists, such as one from a feminist collective in Milan, another from the Lesbian Haunted House in Toronto, owner of a women’s toy store in Brighton, and others from Turkey, Argentina and Serbia. Thus doing the mural on the streets is a form of research by outreach, that generates new connections to report to students as I teach.
From the beginning, myths have told of women who have lived apart from men—the Sirens who sang on the Aegean rocks, the Amazons of the Brazilian jungle, the self-reproducing women on islands in Polynesia, to name only a few. What we are doing is creating a Red Tent community on Isla Mujeres, an island off the coast of Cancun, named so because four statues of women were found on the South Point when Spanish explorers first came here.
